Hot Guys of Reality TV – Nick Simm...American Idol Can't Rock

Doug Blasdell  (Credit: You Tube)

From reading your comments, I know that a lot of you were touched by Doug Blasdell as was I. It’s weird but wonderful that Doug inspired such trust and faith in many people. He was obviously a rare and beautiful human being. The world is a bit sadder without him in it.

Watching Work Out last night, I was disappointed. Again, the show glossed over the significance of Doug’s life and his impending demise. I know Doug wanted to keep his illness a secret. However, the way the show gives it very little attention is upsetting. Poor Peeler! I wanted to give him a big hug. You could tell he was devastated after getting the call that Doug had taken a horrible turn for the worse, but…

…we were still given told no real information about what was wrong with Doug so far. I know the trainers didn’t receive this from Doug. In fact, Mr. Blasdell was very private about his illness. Peeler tells AfterElton.com that, “Doug asked me to keep it private when he was sick. He didn’t want anybody knowing he had cancer and chemo. He was just trying to stay as healthy looking as he could, and he didn’t want anybody to feel bad for him.”

Brian Peeler also provides insight into Doug’s illness. In his blog, he sets the record straight:

“Doug had lymphoma, which is cancer. I think I may have spelled that wrong. He was under going chemo to get it under control. He then got salmonella poisoning which was after his b-day. This would ultimately shut his kidneys down.

While he was in the hospital undergoing dialysis he got a staph infection from the stent in his neck. This would kill his liver and other organs. He had asked me to keep it quiet. So the rest of the staff didn't find out until it was too late.”

Although Peeler couldn’t be with him when he passed, Doug was surrounded by friends. Unfortunately, he “knew he was going to die. It’s painful to know and to think like that. All he wanted to do was live to be 44. To know he outlived his parents. He had such a drive to make it to that age. To beat them out, beat the odds, and live just a little bit longer.” This makes the episode with Doug’s birthday this season even more poignant, doesn’t it?

Peeler also says that he was the one who told the trainers. In fact, he called them individually. The most important thing Brian would like the world to remember about his friend is that “His presence was ungodly. He was everything that every man on the face of this earth should want to be as a human being.”

This clip shows Doug talking about his upcoming birthday and some of his interactions with both Peeler and Cheo:

The show seemed to address the fact that Cheo had kidney problems and needed a transplant. I am no medical expert so I...(more)

Wow Deanna I love how your own self interest just trumps what Doug wanted all along. You're just so upset that the show didn't tell you more about his death and all the guy wanted was to keep it a secret, but you want a 2 hour special on it. But I guess you're right, who cares what he wished about his own death, we need the details!!

Hmmm...interesting perspective. I don't mean disrespect to Doug's memory, but I do believe that the show could honor his life a bit more. It doesn't hurt to mention how he passed away since people do watch and do care. The info is out there. Sorry you perceive my concern as blatant self-interest, but thanks for your comment. You have a right to your opinion.

Let's be for real here. Doug had AIDS. Lymphoma IS cancer and it's also a cancer that is prevalent in people with AIDS. Remember when we first learned of AIDS? They called it the gay cancer. Lymphoma is a cancer of the Lymph nodes, which work very hard to fight the virus and is also attacked by the virus. I don't know why they didn't just put it out there. Maybe they're trying to remove the whole gay-AIDS stigma.

I have not seen any confirmation that Doug had AIDS. If he did, so what? It takes nothing away from his life. It's sad if he did that people would feel the need to hide it, but...when my cousin passed away from AIDS-related issues, we were told it was cancer. It happens and we need to look at ourselves as a society as to why decades later the stigma surrounding this illness lingers. I'm not saying he had it...but you make an interesting point.

I remember it mentioned that Doug's parent's both died at 43 of the "same thing". Lymphoma? On the subject of infection, I am astounded how high the statistics are for people getting life threatening infections in hospitals. I only knew of Doug by the program but something special did shine from that guy's eyes. A very sad loss.

I'm pretty sure that Doug had legitimate lymphoma, not related to AIDS. (It always astounds me that people immediately leap to AIDS anytime a gay man dies, aren't you?) Cancer, especially lymphoma, was very much in his family history.

I am glad you shed some light on how Doug died. I couldn't help but assume that he died from AIDS. They never said anything specific and the way they just called it an illness/sickness and saying how Doug didn't want people to know really made it seem even more like he died from AIDS. But I do understand why he didn't want people to know. It sucks when something terrible happens to you and you try to get passed it but everyone around you just shows you pity. I hope he is at peace with his family. And I hope all his friends and coworkers can heal from their loss. Even though it is sad, they should celebrate the fact that they had such a great person in their lives.

I think that the mention of AIDs is so unfair. The worst thing anyone can do is jump to conclusions about Doug's illness. This is how rumors begin and it is not fair to his memory. I am 100% sure that Doug had cancer and NOT AIDs. (It would be fine if he indeed did have it but don't assign it to him just because he was homosexual and b/c of mis-information) You should stand corrected that the cancer that often effects AIDs patients is called carposes sarcoma and NOT lymphoma. Lymphomas are prevalent in many different patient populations. Also, any person with any knowledge of the progression of AIDs knows that it is a "Wasting Syndrome" which is evident by the appearance of those whom are effected. To also add to this is the fact that the longer your stay in a hospital the more you are at risk for developing or worsening current infections because of the viruses and bacteria that are common to the environment. This is why many people go into the hospital and leave with an infection that they did not come in with. The rule is if you are sick but not deathly ill, try to stay at home for the duration of your treatment, if at all possible! Also, just to qualify my information, I am a Doctor of Pharmacy and this so happens to be one of my specialty areas.

I just want add that Lymphoma is common in AIDS. Approx. 30% of all AIDS patients contract lymphoma according to the Lymphoma Foundation of America (LRFA). I agree that is a crying shame that this disease is still stigmatized the way that it is. However, I am not concluding or stating in any way that Doug's lymphoma was AIDS related.

Does anyone think it is rather strange that his ex-partner Cheo is dying too? I understand the whole "parents/cancer" thing, I just find it a little coincidental that Cheo is also dying.

The show seemed to address the fact that Cheo had kidney problems and needed a transplant. I am no medical expert so I can not say what he has. However, I would caution anyone against suggesting either one of these individuals had AIDS. To me, it's irrelevant. The fact remains that Doug is gone and he was a wonderful man. Cheo is fighting for his life and seems to be equally wonderful. I wish him the best.
