The Pussycat Dolls have been searching for the next doll for the past seven weeks on the CW. I have watched (and enjoyed) every minute of it from the first episode with the gals throwing up after catching a bug to last night’s elimination of the b*tchy Melissa S. The leaves Chelsea, Asia and Melissa R. left to vy for the title.
Yes, I even bought a copy of the Pussycat Dolls’ CD. I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it again: Robin Antin is a genius.
Scantily-clad gals who can sing and shake their moneymakers all day long is a winning formula for reality TV. Sure, there hasn’t been much of a back story on these gals other than the fact that Chelsea used to be fat – yup, the heifer weighed 192 lbs once – and Asia is a teenage mama. Wait! Melissa R.’s parents are doctors, and they don’t want her to be a Pussycat Doll. They think it might be immoral.
Okay, it seems I just double-talked. In a way, I did. Some people might think that PCD is just selling sex and the gals are glorified strippers. The truth is that they are talented (I admit this begrudgingly, but it’s true). They work very long hours and practice incessantly. They’re dedicated divas. However, they’re not empowering women through their music. They’re not taking away their power either.
PCD is fun and funky pop music with a few ballads thrown in. The series is fluffy reality TV filler. It’s a pretty package with not as much substance as it wishes it had. However, it’s highly watchable and well, I’m rooting for Melissa R. to take the gig and prove to her parents that her job is just a job and she’s not a whore…
See Melissa R. and Asia, two of our finalists, perform Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” right here:
