Bollywood actress, Shilpa Shetty, can currently be seen on airwaves all over the UK as part of Celebrity Big Brother. The 31 year old beauty, who may not be known to American audiences, is a big star in her home country. She is not faring very well in the BB House, according to media watchdog, Ofcom.

Thousands of complaints of racism have flooded Ofcom’s offices. The organization is taking the complaints very seriously and promises to investigate each and every one. However, spokespeople warn that disciplinary action against the show or any of its contestants would be a rare possibility.

It seems that a group of individuals, which include former BB winner, Jade Goody, in the house have banded together and are targeting Shilpa, often referring to her as “the Indian”. One contestant suggested that Indians are thin because they “undercook their food.”  They’ve mocked her accent as well.

An expletive, which was deleted from the televised broadcast, was deemed by many to be a racial slur. Channel 4, which airs the program in the UK, denied this charge and mentioned that Shilpa herself has not demonstrated that she’s been bothered by the treatment she’s receiving in any way.

Evicted housemate, Carole Malone, told the BBC Asian Network that the incidents were probably motivated by jealousy and mentions that Shilpa is working hard to represent the Indian/Asian community and “doesn't want to let them or herself down by retaliating.”

All of this difficulty may still have a nice end for Miss Shetty, however. She has oodles of supporters and is an odds-on favorite to win Big Brother, and perhaps the affections of an American actor by the name of Dirk Benedict, who’s in the house with her this season.

At the very least, it is getting the attention of the British House of Commons where Labour MP Keith Vaz mentioned the behavior on the show and denounced as ‘unacceptable.’

Unacceptable indeed!
