Last time on Grease: You’re the One That I Want, the panel brought back two contestants. Producer David Ian said “everyone deserves a second chance” and announced that both Ashley Anderson, a 21 year old waitress from Nashville, TN and Matt Nolan, a 22 year old sports publicist from Rockville Centre, NY, would be making a return to the competition.
What a brief return that was!
After the live performances on January 28th, America was given the opportunity to vote for their favorites. NBC has previously mentioned that America’s votes would be the deciding factor in who gets sent home each week.
However, the panelists had other ideas. Allie Schultz, a 19 year old ballroom dance studio clerk and Jason Celaya, a 31 year old teacher, got the lowest number of votes from America. David Ian, choreographer/director Kathleen Marshall and Jim Jacobs, a co-writer of the original play, decided to overrule that decision. Co-host Denise Van Outen, herself a stage vet, announced that the bottom four would sing for their life and the judges would then choose who would stay and who would go.
In the end, it was Ashley and Matt who were given their walking papers. Many viewers are upset and wonder why they should even bother to vote (or watch in some cases) if the judges are just going to ‘overrule’ them.
