David Gest
David Gest, former husband of Liza Minnelli, is making a major splash across the Pond. The 53 year old music producer and ex-manager of Ms. Minnelli revived his career by appearing on the British version of I’m A Celebrity. Get Me Out of Here. In fact, he had the Brits up in arms when he was voted off in another apparent gaffe. (Remember the votes had to be re-cast on Channel 4’s recent Celebrity Big Brother.)
According to The Sun, more than 30,000 phone votes for Gest to win the contest were lost last November. The network admitted that there had been a “computer system failure” the night of the vote, but denies that there was any error with the final figures.
Regardless, Gest has very little to complain about these days. He’s riding high with his own ITV series, The David Gest Show. Buzz is high that he’ll be replacing ousted judge Louis Walsh on Simon Cowell’s The X Factor. Walsh was axed last week, according to reports, for being “too bland.” Rumor has it that Walsh is very upset about the situation and is adding a tell-all chapter to a book he's working on to get back at Mr. Cowell.
In addition to working on his own series and dating his I’m A Celeb co-star Malandra Burrows, Gest is penning his autobiography and will hit the airwaves in the UK’s search for the new Danny and Sandy in Grease Is the Word. He’ll be sitting on a panel with producer David Ian, who’s currently appearing on the US edition Grease: You’re the One That I Want with Kathleen Marshall and Jim Jacobs and choreographer Brian Friedman, a familiar face to those who watch So You Think You Can Dance.
Grease Is the Word is produced by SyCo TV, Simon Cowell’s production company. It is set to air on ITV beginning on April 7, 2007.
