Britain’s Channel 4 can seem to stay away from the racism controversy. Of course, you know we’ve been following the Shilpa-gate, the Celebrity Big Brother scandal. Now, it seems that there’s a new racist on the block.
Her name is Lucy Buchanan. She’s 18 years old and a member of the cast of a Survivor-style reality series called Shipwrecked. Here are some of Lucy’s gems from Sunday night’s telecast:
"I'm for the British Empire and things. I'm for slavery, but that's never going to come back ... I don't like fat people, I don't really like really ugly people, I don't like it when foreigners come into this country and they don't take on British culture and British values. Fat and ugly people, they really bring you down. They're offensive. They can help it—eat less, exercise more, get their stomachs stitched."
Lucy upset her parents deeply by her remarks. David and Nichola Buchanan have issued a statement wholeheartedly apologizing for their daughter’s remarks. They said, “It is our firm belief that Lucy, as a naive teenager, made these silly and very unfortunate remarks on the back of her excitement at being on Shipwrecked.”
Channel 4 mentioned that Lucy, an Edinburgh native, will change her tune as the show progresses. They defend the airing of these statements to show the young woman’s transformation.
Bristol University, which Lucy deferred enrollment to so she could appear on Shipwrecked, is taking her statements quite seriously. In fact, officials there are considering withdrawing their offer of admission to the privately-educated young lass.
The Commission for Racial Equality is keeping the series under review and advises citizens to complain to the broadcaster. So far, about 600 formal complaints have been made.
