Doug Blasdell  (Credit: Bravo TV)

Doug Blasdell, a 44 year old openly gay man who worked as a trainer for Jackie Warner at Sky Sports and Spa and was featured as part of her reality TV show, Work Out, has died on Monday. He had been hospitalized over the weekend for unknown reasons.

Doug, who was from L.A., became the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated in 1988. Doug enjoyed being part of the series, which was renewed in October, because it showed the gay lifestyle in a very positive way.

Singer Jody Watley, who was a client and close friend of Doug’s – her transformation was followed closely on the series – mentions that he was undergoing chemotherapy for a brain tumor. He had also many in his family including a grandmother and both of his parents to the disease.

Doug referred to himself as the ‘daddy’ of the show because he was older than his counterparts will be greatly missed. Bravo released this statement about his death:

“All of us at Bravo are deeply saddened by the terrible news of Doug Blasdell's untimely passing. He was an inspiring trainer, an exuberant colleague who made the gym a very fun place each and every day, and was extraordinarily warm in all aspects of his life. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his many friends and colleagues at this very difficult time."

As a straight man who has never had a friend that was gay, I must say, watching this show I have seen both the good and bad in "gay life" and Doug was definitely of the good, for some reason, he has touched me, can you believe it? a total stranger on television, but he was the type of guy I could honestly see myself calling a friend and even though I never met him, for some strange reason I am a better human being by watching his example and I would like to thank him for letting me share a small piece of his life and you are absolutely right, it is not fair to Doug or people like me to not touch upon this. To Doug, the friend I never knew

Doug thanks for teaching me to be a better friend and human being, it's sad that you are physically gone, but your caring and loving energy will always stay with us.

I really felt Doug was among the most likeable and down-to-earth reality-based individuals featured in quite some time. I remember hearing him briefly mention at the duel birthday party that both his parents had passed at about the same age and that was about to be older than either of them. I also recall Jesse ending the Doug-Jesse fued by claiming that "Life was too short" sort of the same thing he said to Rebecca. I couldn't imagine the guilt Jesse would feel had he not ended it.

May he rest in peace. It was a sad and terrible shock to us viewers who both respected and loved him.

I have enjoyed getting to know these energetic, hard- working persons through tv and although I never met DOUG personally, I thought he was an "angel" and learning of his passing just now confirms that he is God's favorite angel too and is in his glory. I will miss him and pray for his family and friends who grieve for this ANGEL named DOUG.

I met Doug years ago when I was just 22 years old. Doug and Cheo were the NICEST, Sweetest people I know! When I got my first apartment, Doug and Cheo helped with moving me in and furnishing it, because they were moving themselves. I'd lost touch with Doug and Cheo over the years and truly regret not letting them know how much I truly LOVE THEM BOTH. Doug, I love you and I'll see you in paradise! Thanks for everything!!

I was so shocked to hear that Doug died. He was such a great role model; not only for gay men, but also for 30-something females who found his commitment to fitness-in-the-40's so inspiring. Might sound funny, but even as a hetero female, I wanted to be just like Doug. What a truly unique and wonderful person he seemed to be... a gentle soul who, I'm sure, will be missed terribly.
