Your final four (Credit: American Idol.com)
After watching last night’s episode, I realized something. I’m not really gonna care who wins American Idol this season. It kind of reminds me of the 2000 presidential election. Jordin’s a sweet kid. She’s also a powerhouse vocalist who can sing a power ballad as well as some pop-ier fare. She’s probably got the most mass-market appeal of anyone left in the competition. That translates into dollar signs for the show, which probably explains why Seacrest, Lythgoe and Cowell have lauded her in the press.
Blake, who is tops at DialIdol right now—just barely edging out Miss Sparks, may not be the most technically gifted vocalist, but he’s also highly marketable and, for lack of a better term, “contemporary.” Blake fits into the industry right now as is. He could make some interesting and entertaining music. I don’t think he’ll win, but…he won’t be sitting around idle after Idol for long. He’s a shoo-in for a recording contract.
That leaves Melinda and Lakisha. These ladies can blow, yo. However, both seem a lot older than their years. They’re also in their late 20s and not model beautiful. This industry, whether you like it or not, will be unkind to them. Would Britney Spears have sold as many CDs as she has on the strength of her vocal talent alone? You know the answer to that.
Melinda might win yet. I think Lakisha’s out this week. However, if she does, she’ll be relegated to an R&B/Soul or even Gospel area of the industry where looks matter less than vocal prowess. She won’t be the moneymaker that either Jordin or Blake will be. Look at Ruben’s, Taylor’s and Fantasia’s careers if you don’t believe me.
So, my pick to win is Jordin although I’d like to see Blake take it on home. I think the Final Four are incredibly talented individuals who will all find a place in the music industry, but their success levels will differ depending upon a variety of factors.
What’s your take on it?
