This season of Celebrity Fit Club is horrific to me. Why? For one thing, Dustin Diamond has a heck of a lot of problems. However, the editing makes things worse. Everyone is ganging up on him so I almost feel sorry for the idiot, but that’s not my biggest complaint.
Oh no! Last night, Maureen “Marcia Brady” McCormick talked about her ten-year bout with bulimia in about ten seconds. She said that she used prayer and her ‘belief’ in God to get over it. (Note: In other sources, Maureen has talked about her struggles in further detail and mentions that she did go to therapy too. I wish VH-1 didn’t edit that part out.)
I was so pissed off when I watched the show last night. Why?
Millions of women struggle with bulimia. I, myself, am one. I have been a recovering bulimic for over five years. Before that, I was a practicing bulimic for 14. I have prayed for help in conquering the behavior but it wasn’t enough. I’ve been to therapy. I’ve received anti-depressants to help me through the process. I use acupuncture to manage my stress and eat a mostly raw diet. I exercise. I also keep a journal and a food log. Support groups are also helpful.
Bulimia is a serious psychological and medical condition. I really wish Dr. Ian would’ve said something about it. I don’t want young (or not so young) women out there to think that one, bulimia is a good way to manage their eating and two, that it’s easy to give up the behavior. It’s not.
Maureen may not have thrown up after her meals for years, but she is struggling with binge-eating which is another aspect of bulimia. I only hope that “Dr. Stacy” is aware and really working with her. The fact that Mo turned to food to help her cope with family stresses shows that her relationship with food is far from healthy.
Now, poor Cledus. Does anyone else see that this man is anorexic? It doesn’t matter that he’s still go weight to lose. He’s got anorexia. He’s scared to eat. Instead of applauding his twelve-pound weight loss, the celebs and especially the panel should be concerned and help him. Yes, Dr. Ian did mention that he ate too little, but…I want to know that they’re going to work with Cledus so he really gets it. Cledus needs gentle guidance, understanding and patience.
I do applaud Stacy for taking him to the grocery store. I hope that they continue that kind of work. I’m rooting for both Cledus and Maureen, but I know that their issues are greater than what Fit Club seems to be set up for. Hopefully they will continue to work on rebuilding their lives and their relationship to food long after the show continues.
I just find myself wishing that Vh-1 would not exploit people’s eating disorders to make ‘good TV’ without providing some facts about these conditions which affect so many.
