I can’t believe that I’m going to type these words. I miss Sanjaya Malakar. He added some personality to the competition. Tonight I felt like I was going to slit my wrists after watching American Idol. I really love the concept of America Gives Back. I do. I’m all about helping others, and I think this is a great venue to do it.
However, is it too much to ask to have some personality thrown in?
I understand that the subject matter tonight was very heavy. It’s touching and sad to see children starving all over the world. The conditions that those African children are living in are horrendous. As a world, we should be ashamed of ourselves.
Unfortunately, the music was less uplifting than it could have or should have been. I am not sure if the contestants understood the concept of inspirational music. Maybe I don’t. Chris Richardson did not ‘kill it’ like Randy Jackson tried to say. His version of Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” was flat and a bit icky. My daughter voted for him because she’s four and thinks he’s cute.
Melinda had a great performance. It was, as Simon said, a “master class in singing”. However, it almost inspired me to change the channel. Is there such a thing as being too good? If so, I think Melinda is it, and that’s a bit boring.
Sorry, gal. However, I loved your hair. It was awesome.
Lakisha sang Fantasia’s “Believe.” Wow! It’s bad when I want to hear Fantasia sing a song, but I preferred Fantasia’s rendition to Lakisha’s. What happened, girl? Where’s your spirit? You could’ve owned tonight.
Blake tackled John Lennon’s “Imagine.” It was not good. I mean he’s cute and all, but the song is not a singer’s song. He didn’t make me believe in his vocals. Lennon’s rendition gives me chills, still. Blake’s left me cold.
Phil sang some Garth Brooks. Personally, I think he shines as a country singer, but what was up with the stubble on his head? Phil, shave, baby! You look great clean-shaven in the face and on the dome. He was easily in the top half tonight.
I’ve saved the best for last. Jordin Sparks was amazing. She is a superstar. This girl did “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” I remember this as the song that Jerry Lewis uses to close his yearly telethon. He usually cries as he sings it, so it’s an emotional one for many of us. Jordin did the song beautifully. It was an elegant performance that was heartfelt and, dare I say it, inspirational.
My predictions are that Lakisha and Chris Richardson will be in the bottom two. I think Kiki sang her swan song tonight. Not sure why, but I just do.
Remember that Idol is two hours tomorrow. Not only will we see the results and a bunch of celebrities but we will also get the opportunity to donate to worthy causes across the globe.
