Doug Blasdell  (Credit: Bravo TV)

I am a fan of Bravo TV’s Work Out. Currently in its second season, the show deals intelligently and openly with positive gay and lesbian role models. Although I’m sort of bewildered and titillated at the same time by Jackie’s new-found desire to casually date both Tiffany and Rebecca after breaking off her dysfunctional relationship with Latin spitfire, Mimi, to me, the bigger story this season happens to be the death of trainer, Doug Blasdell.

I realize that Jackie didn’t want to “exploit” Doug’s death, but I think the series needs to continue to address it. (Note: Blasdell, despite previous reports died of renal failure at the age of 44.)

This week’s episode was touching. I really enjoy the way the series showcased Doug’s love for his former partner, Cheo, who was undergoing dialysis at the time Doug took ill. Both men still showed such love and respect for each other. It was encouraging and heart-wrenching at the same time. The show also touched upon the fact that Doug lost his mother, father and sister young. He prophetically mentioned that he didn’t expect to live to see another birthday during a celebration.

I was devastated by the end of the episode. I was in tears, perhaps that’s because I already know the ending, as I’m sure most of you do. The other trainers and Jackie seemed to be in shock. Perhaps, as the drama unfolds – I mean she only announced his illness and mentioned that he’s supposed to be on the mend – we might see more of a reaction.

I just wonder…how’s Cheo doing now? Did they get to say a proper good-bye? Will Doug’s Sky Lab client be able to progress without him? How about his other clients? Is Brian able to cope since he and Doug were so close, etc.?

Hopefully, Work Out can strike the balance of not exploiting Doug’s death while providing closure for the audience. They should not just gloss over the details. Doug’s life deserved more than that.

Besides, I think the series shines when it focuses on the inspiring and motivating aspects of the trainers' lives and not just the sex that takes place inside (and out) of the gym.

But that’s just me. Tell me what you think!

I just saw the show yesterday and can't believe how much this has affected me. I am also a fan of the show and Doug was my favorite trainer. I've been searching for information, photos and video clips all day today. Brian Peeler was a dear friend and is still hurting. Doug pass in January and now it's April. I agree that Jackie and the show's producers need give those who watch more closure. Lisa Chicago, IL

I was also a big fan of Doug. He was a rare human being who showed so much love and compassion to everyone around him. He made me so proud to be a gay person. What a huge loss for everyone who was bless to know him and our community.

Only today, watching a rerun did I realize Doug had passed. I feel silly since I never met the man, only watched him on TV -- yet, I was SO sad to see the "This show is dedicated..." line at the opening of the show. How tragic. He had spoke at his birthday party about how he didn't expect to live. I thought he was just being depressed over ageing in a place like LA where people are eternally 28. So very sad indeed. I do wish the show would address his passing -- perhaps it is coming. It seems so calous for Jackie to call it "the sexy season" in light of losing such a bright and caring member of the Sky Sports team.

I've never followed a reality show, but I caught the first episode of "Workout" this season and kept watching because of Doug Blasdell. I feel silly caring so much about a person I've never even met. I do believe his fundamental decency shines through in his eyes and that's why his story is so tragic. Unfortunately for the TV show, the superficiality and egocentricity of the other trainers is made much more apparent because of Mr. Blasdell's inherent goodness. I'm done with the show. Mr. Blasdell's friends and loved ones have my deep sympathy.

I have watched WorkOut from it's beginning and my favorite trainer was Doug...he was so sincere, caring, handsome and I really thought he was a wonderful role model for the gay community as well as the human race and will remain to be so ....I don't really know what else to say, I did not know this man personally, yet I am so saddened by his passing...Rest in Peace Doug, your legacy will live on and you will be missed...

I enjoy watching Workout and didn't realize that Doug had died until watching the latest episode. I am really sad and feel so out of it that this happened back in January. Doug was an exceptional human being regardless of his orientation. I wish this hadn't happened. The world is now missing a great man so full of empathy, love and kindness.

I just think back on when he was celebrating his 43rd birthday how he was so upset and bothered by it since neither of his parents made it to 43. And one of his comments was, "This will be my last birthday." It just seems so... I don't know the word, but it really chills me inside.

I cannot believe it. Last I heard, Doug was getting better! I will try not to be too sad because we should all feel happy that Doug is truly happy and good place; otherwise, it would be selfish. My prayers go out to Doug's family and friends that will miss him daily in their lives. But, remember, Doug is watching over you all and waiting for the smiles to come back to your faces. He feels good when everyone is happy! We will see you soon Doug...life is short. C

Such a sad ending. I love this show for the concept of family but I also am a christian and I do hope that Doug accepted the Lord as his saivior before his passing... I hope every one on this show does.....

I have watched Workout since the beginning, and as with everyone else was very fond of Doug. He was a great role model and will be greatly missed. All his friends and family are in my prayers. As for the rest of the cast, your loss is a great one, but unlike the rest of us, you got to know this great man. God bless you all.

I watch the show off and on, and Doug seemed like a real decent human being. What happened to him??? I thought he was supposed to be recouperating, and now he's dead?!? Was that all just for TV? As a viewer, I was completely blindsided by this. We need to get some closure here! When you start getting into a show like this, the folks in it become like family to you!

I am a fan of the show & had an inkling that Doug passed away when I saw previews of this week's show, last week. After seeing the latest episode I was shocked to see how sick Doug really was. I had wondered why no one made more of an effort to keep track of his prognosis while he was in the hospital, but it was clear from Doug's conversation w/ Brian that Doug didnt want anyone to see him in that condition. My heart goes out to all of Doug's friends, his family, the Sky Lab personnel, his clients & his many fans. As a lesbian, it was good to see our lifestyle promoted in such a good light. Doug brought such a positive vibe to the show & knowing that he passed away, & seeing how it has affected everyone has definately reminded me that these are real people, living real lives, & dealing w/ real life issues.

I've been on vacation and just watched a rerun. Can't believe Doug, a beautiful man inside and out, is not with us anymore. There was sadness in his eyes. Rest in peace, beautiful soul.

I agree that more closure is needed for all the viewers who feel like they've lost a friend. He was perfectly healthy as of 3 episodes ago. I'm in a complete state of shock having just learned of his passing on tonight's episode. It's just so sad, and I feel for his friends and family. According to the coming attractions for the season's final episode next week, the trainers will have a tribute to Doug. May he rest in peace.

I saw Doug at the Abbey (in West Hollywood) last July by accident when visiting L.A. I had already watched Work Out (first season) and Doug was my favorite trainer already, so I quickly recognized him. Doug was sitting by the wall alone. I came right next to him but I didn't talk to him. (I should have...) This path-crossing (or near-miss) moment has been part of my good memory. Since last night when I first found out his passing away, however, this memory has been perplexing me. His death was so sudden and Bravo did not spare enough time for the closure. I agree with everyone else on this matter. Work Out needs more proper type of closure. I believe there are many people who are touched by Doug, including myself, and we need something more to share our sympathy and show our condolescence.

Well said. Like so many others, I am in shock that this strong healthy man is gone. I waited all week to see how things progressed with Doug and ultimately how he passed. His audience barely got 5 minutes of his story. So many unanswered questions. However, I do respect him and his family if that is the reason for not "exploiting" him. As I big fan of Doug's (I am a hetero gal) I will miss seeing his friendly, smiling, genuine face - a true gift from above. I normally don't watch TV shows of that sort, but he was real. And he taught us how to love and respect each other. Since he captured so many hearts out there in TV land, I sincerely hope Workout will honor him with a proper goodbye show. God Bless.

I am very sad to hear that Doug passed away. He presented as a beautiful soul and enjoyed watching him on television. God bless him.

I just watched the episode again where Brian talks with Doug on the phone, and tries to share the news with the other trainers, but is obviously conflicted as Doug asked him to keep it private. My heart really went out to Brian for the first time. He doesn't exactly have all his issues addressed, but in spite of that, he showed an inner response that was very hard for him to do. Not one of them reached out to console Brian- or did I miss something there? Doug and Brian were close friends and when Brian had his perceived threats rattled, Doug was there to help him get back in the game. I wonder who will step up for Brian now. I wish he and Zen could be there for one another-they are the two most interesting members of the cast in my opinion...in fact BRAVO might just spin off a show for those two when this one nose dives. Can't help but think Jackie is wound up tighter than a drum, and try as she may she still comes across as sad, frightened, very needy, and it's just a matter of time until viewers say "enough" of Jackie's wanton advances-if she were a male and commented on what a nice ass one of the other females has- well you don't have to be an idiot to figure that out. She wants respect, yet she flaunts her sexuality between Tiffany and Rebecca, now done with Mimi, does she have a heart that beats under that cold shell? I have nothing-zero-nada- against lesbians, homosexuals and wish the whole world would give them a fair shake realizing how hard it must be. Life is such a pain in the ass- then try it as a homosexual-! These people do have courage. Bobbi

I think Andre might have tried to comfort him or Zen. I feel that Bravo's editing has really missed the mark this season. Peeler's emotional response was heart-breaking and so genuine. I really felt for him and wanted to hug him through the TV myself.

I'm trying to remember the exact words of Doug's personal motto that had been read by Peeler...It touched me so much. Close to the 'Golden Rule', but more specific.

Man it's really sad to see nice and kind people like doug go.... i really felt the pain that brian was going thru.. from seeing doug on workout...you could totally tell what kind of person he was... kind, funny, enjoyable to be around, inshape but most of all careing... he would always care about making other people feel like a million bucks... before himself.... you will be missed doug...

The show is so good and pulls you in. Doug"s caring and genuine personality captivted the viewrs, you can't pull us in like this and leave his sudden death hardly mentioned. There's a feeling of unfairness there. He was so well loved by the audience. Workout allows us into more than Skyport & Spa but we were also at Doug's birthday party. Thats the last time we saw this good man, we deserve as well as Doug to have more attentin paid to his passing, out of respect to him and to us his fans who grew to love him. Dianne
