Kelly Clarkson has come a long way from her American Idol days. The first winner of the series has a slew of awards, multi-platinum sales and the adoration of millions. Unfortunately, not all is right in the world of this “Miss Independent”.
MTV reports that there are rumors of tension between Kelly and her record label, RCA, specifically with label bigwig, Clive Davis. Apparently, the company wanted her to go in a different direction musically than she wanted to.
As she says, “My label literally sent me a Lindsay Lohan track from her last album and wanted me to record it for my new album. And while I like Lindsay Lohan, like I'm cool with her and I think she sings the song well... it's already been on an album. I don't care what pop star it is.”
Kelly mentions that she doesn’t want to go the ‘formulaic’ route. She understands that the label’s ultimate goal is to sell record, but “I just don't like working with someone that gives you a song and is like, 'Oh, I wrote this for you.' But you find out that they've given it to every other artist and they turned it down, you know?”
In the end, Kelly got her way. She wrote or co-wrote each of the songs on the CD with the people that she “writes well with.” Her third album, My December, which will be released on July 24th, has already spawned a top ten hit, “Never Again”.
Seems like our original Idol is doing just fine on her own!
