This week Heidi and Tim, after their holiday hiatus, got us back into the thick of things on Project Runway. The designers were given a ‘sweet’ challenge – they had to use materials from the Hershey’s store in Times Square to create couture. Jillian took the challenge to heart and began concocting a confection with Twizzlers. The beautiful red skirt and fitted bodice was sexy but hard to put together. Jillian almost didn’t make it down the runway, but her model helped her sew the Twizzlers together.
She got high marks for being the only designer to use edible materials, proving that her talent and creativity certainly paid off. However, Rami, who created a whimsical and technically difficult pleated, halter-style dress made almost entirely of paper, won the day. The talented Israeli-born designer is certainly at the head of the pack…and we’re glad, glad, glad, and glad. We love his aesthetic and the way he makes his models look like goddesses.
Also scoring well was Chris March. The costume designer created a very tasteful (and tasty) dress that looked like wearable pop art. He cited Andy Warhol as his inspiration, using the wrappers from Hershey bars and the paper from inside the Twizzler packages. His model looked absolutely ‘delicious’.
On the bottom wrung were Victorya, Sweet P and Elisa. Victorya used little imagination on her dress. She argued with the judges that it was indeed wearable, but guest judge, Zac Posen, told her it wasn’t. The dress looked more ‘Dairy Queen than candy confection.’ It was something an ugly milkmaid would wear if she was forced into it. There was no imagination and no whimsy. Sweet P threw something together at the last minute after her first dress fell flat. Unfortunately, she should’ve thrown the dress into the trash. Tim Gunn told her the skirt looked like a ‘coffee filter or a maxi-pad.’ Eek!
Finally, Elisa, whose spirit we love, put together a macabre version of a ‘fairy tale’ dress. She wanted her model to look like a ‘deranged Gretel.’ Instead, she looked bored and had silver ‘floaties’ on her arms. Elisa could’ve done so much more with this challenge, but the judges had had enough of her hit and miss style. They sent her packing. We’ll miss her, but we’re eager for the competition to heat up!
