Jack and his model before his departure (Credit: Bravo TV)
We love Jack Mackenroth. He’s an amazing designer and was a joy to watch on Project Runway. Unfortunately, Jack had to bid the competition adieu this week not because he created a disastrous design. Perish the thought! Jack, who’s been HIV-positive for 17 years, had a staph infection. He decided to withdraw from the competition to take care of his health, which he tells TV Guide is great. After he left the show, Jack spent several days in the hospital. Since then, he’s not only recovered but also found a new relationship. He’s kinda-sorta dating Top Chef’s Dale (Levitski).
Awww! Now that’s a reality TV super-couple we can’t wait to hear more from.
Anyway, back to our Runway recap. Jack was out. The designers wept for their fallen friend. However, Tim surprised everyone by bringing Chris March back. The costume designer was auf’d on last week’s episode for his ugly fabric choice and frumpy design.
This time, Chris was given Jack’s client. Too bad he didn’t get to keep the work Jack began. It looked fierce. The models this week were women who had lost a significant amount of weight – some had lost well over 100 lbs. The designers had to create a new outfit showing off their transformation from their former favorite “fat” outfits.
Jillian didn’t use much of her client’s fabric. However, she did find a new fabric choice in the same color and made a beautiful dress that was sexy and sophisticated at the same time. This spared her. Ricky surprised us by connecting significantly with his client and by making a cute swing top that had us wishing we had one just like it.
Rami did impeccable work as usual. Kit’s clothes were cute. Victorya was good enough to slide through. Kevin’s re-creation of his client’s blazer was really lovely. You could tell his model adored what she was wearing. He narrowly missed out on winning the challenge. In the end, the nod went to Christian. He did turn his model’s outfit into something sexy, classy and commercial. She looked really good. Although we aren’t fans of his major cockiness, the boy can make some fantastic clothes.
Elisa, Chris and Steven were on the chopping block. Chris was called out for his costume-y look. Apparently, the judges felt he made his model look like a Parisian prostitute cerca 1950. As for Elisa, she concocted a layer-ific look that added bulk to her model’s frame and didn’t look like it was made with her in mind.
However, the judges couldn’t overlook Steven’s hot mess of a dress. He used very little of his model’s bridal gown. Instead, he chose black fabric. We thought she looked like the flying nun. The judges thought she looked like a ‘French maid at a funeral.’
Me-ouch!
