Tim Gunn is a fabulous gay superhero. He is fashion-man, the style guru for the masses. The CCO (Chief Creative Officer) of Liz Claiborne and Bravo TV darling can do with the help of one supermodel, Veronica Webb, what five sets of Queer Eyes used to do. He can take a woman from frumpy to fantastic in less than a week. He gets them to shed their old clothes and throw away items they never would’ve done before. He sends his minion, the lovely Webb, into the depths of their underwear drawers, teaching these ladies that the cut of a good bra can lift more than the mammary glands. It can lift your spirits.
Gunn takes no prisoners. He exercises tough love with fashion victims, but he is a benevolent sort of dictator. Tim is firm but fair, tough but tender and just a really secure individual. He is helping to save the world one fashion victim at time…
And the challenges aren’t always easy.
This week, Tim was faced with a true dilemma in Elena Frappier. The 32 year old mom of one has hoarded clothes all her adult life. Her husband, Cree, with whom she’s been involved for 15 years, has been begging for some closet space. Elena is so attached to her clothes that she gives them genders. Well, no-nonsense Tim neutered her wardrobe immediately, telling her to take pictures to save her memories and ditch the duds. They’re not working for her.
A truly beautiful woman, Elena was hiding her frame in ill-fitting, boxy and patterned prints that just made her look dumpy and ho-ish at the same time. Not a good combination. Elena admitted that she let herself go especially since becoming a mom (we can totally relate), but wearing a maternity bra to bed? Eeek!
Luckily, Veronica helped Elena find new bras in the proper size – she’s a 34D in case y’all care – and a great bikini. Elena’s a beautiful woman with a great shape so it was good to see her show it off in something that flattered her.
Later on, Tim taught Elena the proper proportions for her frame. She needs A-line skirts and belts to cinch her tiny waist. He then introduced her to Greg Behrendt, the comedian/author,talk show host. He coached Elena on all the ‘hats’ she wears, the different roles in her life. In session, they realized that Elena (big surprise) can’t find time to do things for herself. Greg reminded her that she needs to be the number one priority in her own life. The advice seemed to stick which was good.
The following day, Elena shopped around Macy’s with her sister, trying to fill the list of ten essentials that Tim swears every woman needs in her wardrobe. Unfortunately, she had trouble on her own. Tim and Veronica swooped in to save the day and … after Tim took Elena to see his pal, designer Jill Stuart, who gifted the frazzled mom with a lovely one-of-a-kind dress, she really began to give in and embrace the entire process.
After a new hair cut, color and some makeup tips, Elena dazzled her family and friends with a fashion show. Tim did it again. He created another fashionista in record-breaking time…and we are so glad.
