Cheo & Peeler Embrace (Credit: Bravo TV)
Okay! I asked for it. All season I’ve been begging the folks at Work Out to do an adequate tribute to Doug Blasdell. I prayed that they wouldn’t let his beautiful spirit down. They didn’t.
Last night’s finale had me weeping. It was poignant, touching, loving and heartfelt. The beginning was a tribute to Doug. We saw how the trainers were handling things since his passing, each in his/her own way. Peeler took over training Cheo, Doug’s former partner. The two of them shared a truly genuine and heart-breaking chat, commiserating over the loss of someone they both adored in very different ways. The sense of loss was palpable and more powerful than anything I’ve ever seen in reality TV before.
Jackie gave her team and herself time to grieve. I think that was wise. She and her crew finally took a bike ride to the ocean and spent time honoring their family member. Each shared moments with and memories of Doug. I felt like we, the audience, got to memorialize him too.
Jesse hung around with his pal, Jasmine. She recently had surgery for thyroid cancer. The two dated before Jesse came out and are still very close. Jasmine’s trying to rebuild her figure and career after her battle with cancer. Jesse’s helping to train her and is learning to be more open and loving with her. He says that’s part of Doug’s legacy in his life. (Where’s the f’in Kleenex, y’all? I had just put it away.) Jesse travels to watch her sing at the NBA All-Star game. It was very sweet.
Meanwhile, Rebecca and Jackie have a golf date. Lesbians playing golf seems a bit stereotypical, don’t it? Just saying…
Later on, the crew returned to celebrate not only the success of Sky Lab, Jackie’s weight loss/fitness project, but also her clothing line which is now being sold at Paiva retail outlets. Everyone but Andre’s charge, Kiki. She decides that she didn’t have the time to devote to her health and fitness over her studies.
Everyone lost some weight and decreased their body fat. Tess told Jackie she’s studying to become a trainer now herself, and Laurie, who originally worked with Doug, shed about forty pounds and gained a heck of a lot of self-esteem. She said she hoped Doug was proud of her.
I’m sure he is. I do have to give props to Jackie, the trainers and Bravo for showing Doug’s life and memory in such a respectful manner. I feel that they did give us some closure too. I’m eating some crow here, but I’m okay with that.
I wonder - were you as moved by the finale of Work Out as I was? Share your feelings below.
Note: For those of you who want to honor Doug’s memory in a more tangible way, you can check out the Doug Blasdell Foundation and donate to the Los Angeles City College in his memory.
