The Trump Organization, Donald Trump’s primary company with headquarters in – where else – TrumpTower - is the owner of the Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe brands. Unless you’ve been living under a rock – or never watch beauty pageants ever – you’re aware of this.
The Donald, of course, is no stranger to reality TV. We shouldn’t be surprised that his people got together with MTV’s people and came up with a reality TV series chronicling the day-to-day lives of the current Miss Universe, Riyo Mori, Miss USA 2007, Rachel Smith and Miss Teen USA 2006, Katie Blair. Joining them along for the ride is former Miss USA Tara Conner.
Conner made headlines last year for her troubles with substance abuse. Trump’s decision not to dethrone her sparked quite a bit of controversy, including his drawn-out feud with Rosie O’Donnell. 7 months sober, Tara is returning to the Trump Organization to help show the girls the ropes as a mentor and advisor.
Unfortunately, the girls are less than thrilled at the prospect of sharing the spotlight with the disgraced beauty queen. Mr. Trump is boss, and this is what he wants, so they must abide.
The first episode dealt with the Smith’s unfortunate fall at the 2007 Miss Universe Pageant, which was a YouTube sensation. Smith was also told not to let the other girls know that Tara was making her return. However, in the interest of her friendship with the ladies, she decides to spill the beans. Katie, who shared some headlines with Tara – rumor had it that they shared a special kiss – and had a falling out with her former friend over her boyfriend, seemed to take things in stride. Riyo, a self-described “modern female samurai” who wants to meet Yankees slugger Hideki Matsui now that she’s in town, isn’t sure if Tara’s mentorship is needed, but seems willing to do whatever is necessary to be a good Miss Universe.
However, she forgets her passport en route an appearance. Luckily, airport security let her through with her handy-dandy beauty queen sash.
Ah! The life of a beauty queen is terribly exciting, and Pageant Place has promise. We figure it’s worth at least another looksie or two for the beauty and the drama.
Pageant Place currently airs on MTV Thursdays, Thursdays at 10:30 ET/PT.
